Moving into a new apartment is a pain in the ass, but it’s especially difficult when the place is this old. Granted, there’s something to be said for a bit of turn-of-the-century charm nestled amongst the modern skyscrapers and big city New York lights, but it would also be nice to have an elevator that worked.

As I stand below my giant mattress, wedged halfway between floors six and seven while my friend, Andy, tries desperately to keep me from being crushed under the rectangular mass, I think about how I just had to have the penthouse apartment.

“You just had to have the top floor view, didn’t you?” Andy calls down to me.

I laugh. “I was just thinking the same thing!” I yell back up the stairs towards him.

My laugher suddenly gets the best of me and the mattress slips from my hand, crashing onto the steps and then rolling end over end towards me. I leap out of the way just in time to see it bounce down the first flight and them immediately get lodged in the stairway below it. Andy and I exchange glances.

“What the hell is going on out there?” a voice suddenly bellows from somewhere down below, one of the neighbors apparently disturbed from his mid-day slumber.

I immediately run down to the mattress and, with all of the strength I can muster, dislodge it before frantically pushing it upward. The angry neighbor is not far behind.

Somehow, our hurry makes it easier to carry and before I know it we are at the upper landing, apartment 700.

I quickly unlock my door and kick it open, swinging inward to reveal a completely bare penthouse just waiting to be livened up with some brand new furniture. We push in the mattress inside just as the footsteps following us round the corner below, then Andy and I collapse onto it in a fit of laugher as we slam the door behind us.

“Shh!” I warn, hushing my friend as the footsteps reach my door. We quiet down and there is a moment of brief silence while we hold our breath, hoping that the person outside will just wander off and forget about us, but seconds later there is a loud, firm knock.

Andy looks to me but I say nothing, shaking my head in a quiet warning. I put my finger to my lips.

The knocking comes again, and again.

Finally, I speak. “Coming!” I climb to my feet and then pull open the door. “Listen, I’m really sorry about that.” My words suddenly catch in my throat when I see the man standing before me.

He’s small and strange, with long black hair and thick glasses that frame his dark beady eyes. The bizarre looking man stares up at me with a look of relief on his face, which is nowhere near the expression of anger I was expecting.

“You’re the new tenant,” he says.

“I am,” I reach out my hand in an attempt to shake his, but the man doesn’t move so I pull it back awkwardly.
